Prof. Dr. Kazuya Yamagata
Kumamoto University

Professor Kazuya Yamagata of the Faculty of Life Sciences (Department of Pathophysiological Biochemistry) received Second Prize at the 62nd (FY2025) Erwin von Bälz Prize, a prestigious award established in 1964 to promote medical research collaboration between Japan and Germany. His winning study, “Identification and Mechanistic Analysis of Diabetes Caused by Abnormalities in Pancreatic β-Cell Transcription Factors,” was recognized for its originality and broad scientific relevance under the 2025 theme focusing on insulin secretion and diabetes. Building on his earlier identification of HNF1α and HNF4α as causative genes of MODY, Professor Yamagata has advanced understanding of pancreatic β-cell function and the pathophysiology of both monogenic and common forms of diabetes. The selection committee praised the research for its theoretical depth, methodological rigor, and clinical potential, and the award ceremony was held on December 2 at the German Ambassador’s Residence in Tokyo, attended by senior representatives of the Federal Republic of Germany.
